how to display mail as unread until you open it

I'm trying to set an option in my Mail preferences, where I could leave unread emails "unread" until I open it. I find it annoying that as soon as you select the email (only to view as preview), that the email is now read. In Outlook, there's an option to leave the emails as unread until you open them, it makes it easier when you scroll up and down in your Inbox email list. Any such option in Mail ?

That isn't a preview. It is the message you are viewing when you select it.

Just close the viewing pane by dragging the divider all the way to the right side of the window. If you want to View a message, double-click to open it in its own window. As you scroll down the list, they won't be marked as read.

You can set the preview up to 5 lines in the message list, so you can preview quite a bit as you scroll through the emails.

Good evening,

Thank you for your reply. I tried what is mentioned in your reply, however, I'm not exactly able to do as instructed, as I'm viewing my emails as "Use classic layout". If I remove the Preview Pane which is below, the emails are actually kept as Unread as I scroll up and down, but I can no longer preview them at all. What am I doing wrong or missing ? I basically would like to scroll up and down within my email list without turning them as read, but also to have a preview at the bottom.
